Acupuncture For Kids
When people think about acupuncture, they often associate it as a treatment exclusive to adults. But adults aren't the only ones who can reap the benefits of acupuncture. In fact, acupuncture has long been an effective holistic treatment option for children.
Pediatric acupuncture uses natural methods to stimulate the body's innate healing ability, restores balance, and essentially supports your child's natural resilience and overall health. Today, more parents are moving away from pharmaceuticals and leaning towards alternative, safer practices such as acupuncture to treat their child's ailments and improve their quality of life.
What are the benefits of acupuncture for my child?
Acupuncture is a great alternative to western medicine for parents who don't want their kids to take prescription medicine or want to reduce the number of prescription medications their child needs. Here are some of the benefits of acupuncture for children.
Reduces symptoms in children dealing with back pain, headaches, stomachaches, and chronic issues
Activates immune response in children
Increase a sense of calmness
Circulates blood and oxygen to tissue and organs
Can potentially treat skin conditions such as eczema
Sinusitis, bronchitis, and asthma
Gastritis, colitis, hiccups, and constipation
Is acupuncture safe for children?
Absolutely. Regardless of what it might seem, acupuncture is painless. Treatments should make your child feel relaxed and comfortable throughout the process.
What if my child is afraid of needles?
Many parents and children worry about whether the needles will hurt. It's not uncommon for children to associate an acupuncture needle with getting a shot from the doctor's office or getting their blood drawn.
However, acupuncture needles are quite different from hypodermic needles. For starters, the needles used in acupuncture are not drawing anything out of your child's body, and it doesn't go directly inside the body. Another important distinction is that the needles are hair-thin, creating a more pleasant experience for your child. We often refer to them as "taps" or "fairy wands" for the littles.
Taps for children under 4 are put in and immediately taken out. Their nervous system isn't as complex as adults so it doesn't need to be left in for long. Children ages 5-8 have their taps left in for under a minute while ages 9-12 have taps left in for a few minutes, and kids 12-14 can expect to have taps in between 5-10 minutes.
With kids who have disabilities, we work with where their nervous system regardless of their age.
We also have experience working with babies as old as a week who have reflux, constipation, tongue tie revision, bilirubin, colic, and more.
How old does my child need to be to start acupuncture treatment?
Many parents who are considering acupuncture for their children wonder what's the best age to get them started with therapy. However, infants as young as a week can get started with acupuncture.
Acupuncture is a safe holistic treatment that offers long-term positive effects for children. With that said, the best time to consider acupuncture is as soon as your child begins to feel, or you notice symptoms.
How many treatments will my child receive?
The number of treatments will depend on a few factors such as:
The severity of the child's illness
The duration of the child's symptoms
The capabilities of the child
